📍 Frá Yachtcharter Lemmer, Netherlands
The Wouda pumping station in Lemmer, Netherlands, is the world’s largest steam-driven pumping station. Built in 1918, the station is a marvel of Dutch innovation and engineering. Its complex system of steam engines, pumps, and valves pump massive amounts of water from the IJsselmeer inland sea to be used for drinking, irrigation, and transportation. Visitors to the pumping station can explore the interior and exterior of the building, as well as visit the turbine hall which is full of hundreds of valves and gauges. Wouda also houses a museum that showcases the history of the building, from its construction to its conversion to a steam-powered pump. It also offers interactive activities, like steam-engine working demonstrations, to help visitors better understand the inner workings of the station. While in Lemmer, don’t forget to take in the views of the IJsselmeer. The area offers beautiful sunsets, lush greenery, and diverse wildlife. There’s also plenty of boating, canoeing, and fishing to be enjoyed!
