Shinkyo Bridge
📍 Japan
The Shinkyo Bridge in Nikko, Japan, is one of the most visited sites in the area. The bridge is a sacred bridge that connects the Futarasan Shrine with the Toshogu Shrine, both sites of Japan's most important Shinto shrines. Legend has it that the bridge was built from the torii gate of the Toshogu Shrine in 1636. It is a bright vermilion-colored mid-span bridge with two sides of each side tapered like an arrow tail, said to have been designed by an unknown spiritual figure. The bridge encompasses the deity enshrined on Mt. Nantai, who is believed to guard the Toshogu Shrine. Not only is the Shinkyo Bridge a beautifully designed piece of architecture, it is also a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Its structure, which is made of 36 separate parts, is said to be the symbol of Japan's oldest and most ancient culture. When you visit the Shinkyo Bridge, you'll have the opportunity to experience firsthand the historical and cultural heritage behind it.
