Kirkstall Abbey is a beautiful 12th century ruin located in the district of Kirkstall, Leeds, United Kingdom. This Cistercian monastery was founded by the Count of Alnwick in 1152 and was one of the most important abbeys in the north of England. The remains of the abbey are both picturesque and majestic, consisting of a three story gatehouse, walls decorated with gargoyles, and ruins of the seven towers. Visitors to the site will find much of the architecture has been preserved and they can still enter the chapter house, cloister and refectory. For those who are interested in history, the abbey has an associated museum, the Abbey House Museum, which will provide detail about the monastery’s history and impact on the area. If photography is more your thing you won't be disappointed, as the abbey provides for some stunningly beautiful artist shots. Kirkstall Abbey also provides for an enjoyable day out for families, with the area being host to many events, such as falconry, theater and live music events.
