The striking Iglesia de Santa María de Betancuria is the oldest church in the Canary Islands. Located in the beautiful mountain village of Betancuria, this baroque-style church was built in 1393. Its ivory sand-stone façade is made of material brought over by the Guanches tribes. Inside, the church holds beautiful paintings, sacred sculptures and ancient furnishings, making it a real treat to explore. The nave of the church is crowned with a large wooden-framed dome, while the altar boasts a gilded retable. The church also has a museum with cultural artefacts, making it an ideal destination to learn about the history of the island.
