Machu Picchu is one of the most iconic archaeological sites in the world. Located in the rugged Peruvian Andes mountain range and designated as one of the New Seven Wonders of the World, the ruins of Machu Picchu are an unforgettable sight. Discovered in 1911 by explorer Hiram Bingham, Machu Picchu was built in the mid-1400s by the Inca Empire. Its purpose is still a mystery, but its location atop a towering mountain makes it an incredible sight to behold. The ruins are divided into three distinct areas: the industrial sector, the urban sector, and the agricultural and religious sector. Visitors to Machu Picchu can walk the grounds and explore these areas, as well as gaze upon spectacular panoramic views of the valley below. The site is also home to an impressive array of terraces, temples, and other structures, many of which have been painstakingly restored over the years.
