Collégiale Saint-Symphorien is a beautiful 11th century ex-abbey located in Saint-Symphorien-sur-Coise, France, approximately 70 km from Lyon. The abbey has long been associated with the history of this region, having been built by the Benedictines in 1030. A must-see element of this abbey is the octagonal cloister, or mail, which dates back to the 15th century. It is also home to a tapestry depicting France's patron saint, Joan of Arc. Inside the building, visitors can admire the intricate painted ceiling and the beautiful stained-glass windows. The Romanesque bell tower is home to a rich carillon that can be heard throughout the village. Exploring the surrounding grounds will lead visitors to a well-appointed 14th century cemetery, the Baptistery of St. Anthony, and a well-preserved circular Romanesque fountain. The abbey is open to visitors every day and admission is free of charge.
