The Chicago Fire House is an iconic structure and a lasting monument of the Great Chicago Fire of 1871. It is located by Cortland and Mohawk Streets in the city’s historic Near West Side. Built in 1814, it is the oldest fire station in Chicago and one of the oldest and most preserved firehouses in the country. The building reflects the Fire Department’s transition from a volunteer service to a more professional one. Today, it is home to the Chicago Fire Department Office of Fire Investigation, which proudly serves the city and continues to ensure the safety of its citizens. Visitors can take a tour of the building, where they can learn about the history of the Chicago Fire Department and see the artifacts of the era.
