📍 Frá Point de vue de la Seine, France
Château-Gaillard is an impressive ruined castle in Les Andelys, France, an hour's drive north of Paris. Built in 1196 by Richard the Lionheart, the castle was intended to symbolize the English king's authority in Normandy. The castle is spread out atop a long hill, and visitors can explore the ruins, including interesting defense structures, numerous towers, and walls. The castle provides stunning views of the Seine Valley. The remains of dungeons, a barrack, kitchens, and a well can all still be seen. Visitors can learn about its rich history in the nearby museum, which includes interactive displays. Château-Gaillard is accessible by car, or by bike through the adjacent park. Free parking is available at the base of the hill.
