Built in 1143, the basilica is located on the far east side of the port and is one of the most unique cathedrals in Europe due its unique mixture of Apulian-Romanesque, Byzantine, Gothic and Romanesque architectural styles. The façade of the church contains some of the most intricate and beautiful designs of the Romanesque style, including an elaborate portal adorned with Byzantine style reliefs and towers, with spectacular arch-shaped windows. Among other features of the Cattedrale Beata Maria Vergine Assunta is a wonderful cloister and the crypt, which contains the remains of Blessed Odoardo of Trani, who declared a saint in 1839. The interior of the cathedral is just as impressive, with magnificent domes and fine decorations, making it arguably one of the most awe-inspiring wonders in Italy.
