Kampong Ayer, the historical water village of Brunei, is best known for being the Venice of the East. Its Brunei River is big part of the charm, with a steady stream of traditional wooden boats cruising past colorful stilt dwellings. From the riverside boardwalk, visitors can view the village in its entirety and admire the traditional ‘kampong’ (villages) constructed upon poles in the water. It is a spectacular sight, particularly during sunrise and sunset. Kg. Ayer is a great place to explore the native culture, since the local way of life has been mostly preserved. Visitors can purchase local snacks at food stalls, as well as visit souvenir shops and galleries. A must-try is the Bruneian cuisine which can be enjoyed along the historical promenade.
