The Archdiocese of Bologna, located in the gorgeous Italian city of Bologna, is one of the oldest dioceses in the world, having been founded in the 4th century. It is the seat of the Archbishop of Bologna and is the main religious and spiritual centre for the Catholic Church in the city. The diocese has its own ancient basilica dedicated to Geminianus, protector of the city, and the imposing Gothic cathedral of Saint Petronius, the patron saint of Bologna. Inside the cathedral are many fine works of art, including frescoes and paintings by some of the great Italian masters. Other sites of interest within the Archdiocese are the Church of the Holy Crucifix and the Church of San Domenico, which houses The Bolognese Chapel containing works by the 16th century Italian painter Bartolomeo Cesi and his school. The Archdiocese of Bologna is a great place to explore and soak up the history and culture of this vibrant Italian city.
