Arc de Triomphe

The iconic Arc de Triomphe is one of Paris' most famous monuments. Located in the centre of the Place Charles de Gaulle, the 45m high triumphal arch was commissioned by Napoleon I to celebrate the military victories of the French army. Built between 1806 and 1836, the arch is decorated with sculptures and inscriptions dedicated to these battles and to Napoleon's generals. The names of 128 battles are inscribed on its four pillars. From the terrace on the roof, visitors can enjoy spectacular views of the Avenue des Champs-Élysées and the Paris skyline.
