Building started in 1745, and the construction of the interiors was finished in 1776. It is now the oldest and largest monastery library in the world. The library contains 7000 manuscripts and 200,000 books, with most of them being from the 17th and 19th centuries. It is also home to many rare and priceless books, including a Jewish prayer book from 1430, and a set of nine volumes written by the Italian poet Dante Alighieri. The staff also offers guided tours and visitors can take fascinating self-guided tours. Not to be missed is the incredible ceiling fresco by Bartolomeo Altomonte, which is the largest fresco painting in the world. Don’t forget to visit the museum, as it is home to several interesting exhibitions, including a collection of artifacts from the Monastery’s history.
