It is also the only river within California that hosts an intact river complex, with tributaries, wetlands, and riparian areas that are essential for maintaining species diversity. The river provides numerous recreational opportunities, such as rafting, kayaking, fly fishing, camping and bird watching. Along the rivers there are numerous bridges, rock formations, and calming sections. Visitors can also explore the surrounding national forests at Smith River NRA, Six Rivers National Forest, Redwood National Forest and Siskiyou National Forest.
