It was built between 1851-1855 under the rule of Khan Ismail I, and stands at an impressive 48m tall. The minaret is decorated with bright coloured tiles, inscribed with Koranic verses and floral designs, and is the most iconic structure in Khiva. The name “Juma”, meaning Friday, comes from its proximity to the “Friday Mosque”, the main mosque of the city. It’s an impressive sight surrounded by traditional houses and the ramparts of the city’s walls, and it’s a great way to get an insight into the history and culture of the region.
