Nestled within a sleepy desert region of India, Jaisalmer is a city like no other. This former princely city is made up of many traditional sandstone buildings in the vibrant yellow, pink and orange hues that the city is famous for. The city dates back to 1156 and has remained mostly intact for centuries. Highlights of the city include the Jaisalmer Fort, which is atop a hill in the centre of Jaisalmer and is adorned with many intricately carved and painted archways, windows, balconies and temples. Another must see is the Salim Singh-ki-Haveli, a 300-year-old mansion with a breathtaking balcony assembly. The city also offers some of the most spectacular sunset and sunrise views, due to its location in the Thar Desert. There are plenty of rooftop restaurants, also popular for their views, which are perfect for dining and taking in the breath-taking sights. Jaisalmer is a great place for some peace and quiet, stargazing and a truly unique break from the hustle and bustle of everyday life.
