Mauao, or Mount Maunganui, is located at the entrance of Tauranga Harbour and is an iconic landmark of the city. It is an important sacred site for the local Maori people and is the subject of many popular songs in New Zealand. The summit of Mount Maunganui is accessible via hiking trails and can be reached in 15-20 minutes, depending on your fitness level. The area around the summit offers amazing views of the surrounding environment, as well as the spectacular sunset over the ocean. Wildlife is abundant here and you may even spot dolphins near the shore. The base of the mountain is home to white sandy beaches, which are perfect for swimming, surfing, and beach volleyball.
