Tian Tan Buddha, known as the Big Buddha, is one of the most iconic landmarks in Hong Kong. Located on Lantau Island, the giant statue stands at an impressive 34 metres high and is surrounded by 8 smaller statues representing various natural elements such as rocks and water. Visitors to the site can admire the incredible detail that went into making the statue and also explore the site's halls and monasteries, filled with sacred Buddhist artifacts. From the viewing platform around the base, visitors can also take in breathtaking views out across the surrounding island and sea. A popular pilgrimage route circles around the base and has been used for centuries by locals. The site is open all year round, but operations may be limited due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
