Catedral de Mondoñedo

The Church of Mondoñedo (Catedral de Mondoñedo) is considered an architectural jewel in Europe. Built in the 12th century, this cathedral is a unique example of Galician Romanesque-Gothic style, incorporating many elements of the pre-Romanesque period. It was declared a National Monument in the mid-19th century and a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in the early 21st century. Inside, the most important feature is the covered cloister with its finely sculpted capitals. The cloister has a two-story arcade including sixteen bays arranged around a central one, with sculptures from the 13th century adorning the capitals. The other two chambers of note are the Bishops' Palace and the Chapter House, which feature stringently symmetric decorations. The cathedral, still in use today, is a stunning testimony of history and art. Don't miss it!
