The Panama Canal is one of the most ambitious engineering feats of our modern world. First opened in 1914, this 48-mile canal connects two of the most powerful oceans in the world - the Caribbean Sea and the Pacific Ocean.  Cross through it on a cruise liner, or marvel at its feats from the Miraflores Locks – a man-made lake located in Panama City. You can also see the old Gatun Locks on the Bahamas side of the canal, built over 100 years ago, and the world’s largest man-made lake and rainforest. From the lookout, you can see hundreds of ships passing through the canal and admire the beautiful surroundings of both land and water. Visit nearby Gamboa for a closeup view of huge ships navigating the Culebra Cut. Stop by the Gamboa Rainforest Resort for a truly tropical zipline experience, and explore the surrounding waterways and rainforest trails.
