The Monastery of Batalha is one of the greatest monuments of sacred architecture in Portugal. It was built as a royal memorial to commemorate the 1385 Battle of Aljubarrota and is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Built in a traditional Gothic-style, it features a burial chamber of King João I (who enacted the battle), a beautiful interior cloister, detailed stained glass windows, impressive stone vaulted ceiling and the famous Royal Cloister with gorgeous carved Gothic Revival arcades. This delicate masterpiece of Manueline architecture offers a beautiful sight that captures the richness of the Portuguese culture and its historical importance.
