The striking Iglesia de Santa María de Betancuria is the oldest church in the Canary Islands. Located in the beautiful mountain village of Betancuria, this baroque-style church was built in 1393. Its ivory sand-stone façade is made of material brought over by the Guanches tribes. Inside, the church holds beautiful paintings, sacred sculptures and ancient furnishings, making it a real treat to explore. The nave of the church is crowned with a large wooden-framed dome, while the altar boasts a gilded retable. The church also has a museum with cultural artefacts, making it an ideal destination to learn about the history of the island. Visitors are welcomed with open arms and are free to wander the grounds and admire the building’s beautiful decorations.
