Arctic Cathedral

Tromsdalen’s Arctic Cathedral, also known as the Tromsøysund Church, is a unique piece of architecture located in the heart of Tromsdalen, Norway. The Arctic Cathedral is an iconic landmark of the city and an important part of local history and culture. The church was designed by Danish architect Jan Inge Hovig in 1965 and constructed in a cruciform shape with a pyramid shaped roof. The church’s distinctive architecture, with its pointed roof and angled walls, gives it an appearance reminiscent of a Viking long-boat. Inside, the circular nave is flooded with natural light from large windows and skylights. The church has a seating capacity of 550 people, and is adorned with several beautiful stained-glass windows and various pieces of artwork. The building is open for visitors throughout the summer season, making it a perfect spot to explore and learn about the region’s history. The beautiful scenery from the church grounds makes it ideal for photography, but there isn’t just the one viewpoint! With various trailheads and fishing spots, visitors can explore the stunning nature of the surrounding Tromsøysund area.
