Viaduc de Laval

Visible from the town of Laval, the Viaduc de Laval was constructed in 1840 by the famous civil engineer Louis Gustave Brunet. The impressive structure is an imposing three-span, stone-faced masonry arch bridge that stands quite tall at 42 meters. It is a remarkable example of nineteenth century engineering, and at the time of its construction was the highest masonry arch bridge in the world. Situated at the confluence of the Mayenne and Loir rivers, the bridge was built to connect Laval with the province of Anjou. The bridge is open to pedestrians, cars, and trains and offers a great opportunity to explore the riverbanks and its surroundings. As an architectural feat, the bridge has a classic design that still stands the test of time with its stonework and slits in the parapets. Today, Viaduc de Laval is a popular spot among tourists and photographers for the far-reaching views of the valley it offers.
