Pelourinho

Pelourinho and Parte Histórico de Salvador is one of the oldest and most famous historic districts of Salvador, Brazil. A World Heritage Site, it is filled with colorful colonial-era architecture, cobblestone streets, churches, museums, and plenty of lively atmosphere. It was the center of the city’s cultural and social activities, but was left abandoned due to earthquake damage in the 1940s. Today, however, the area has undergone extensive restoration and a revitalization project in the late 1990s has transformed it into a contemporary spot rife with history and color. Be sure to explore the winding labyrinth of narrow alleyways and interact with locals, who often have incredibly interesting stories to tell.
