Santuario San Damiano

Santuario San Damiano, in San Damiano, Italy, is a magnificent basilica in the heart of the Italian town. Built in the 10th century in the Romanesque style, the sanctuary was home to Saint Francis of Assisi who founded the Franciscan Religious Order and whose remains are kept in the vault of the main altar. The Church of San Damiano is filled with art and architecture of varying ages, with the external walls being adorned with biblical scenes painted by famous artists. Inside the church, visitors can admire the spectacular frescoes, wooden statues and a mausoleum. The most prominent attraction of the Santuario San Damiano is a painting of Jesus Christ painted on wood, which, according to legend, spoke to Saint Francis and encouraged him to rebuild the Church. Today, the site is a popular destination for pilgrims.
