Kennin-ji Kaisando (Founder’s Hall)

Kennin-ji Kaisando is a Founder’s Hall located at the oldest Zen temple in Kyoto, Japan. Founded in 1202, the temple as a whole is a registered UNESCO World Heritage Site. Kaisando is an important part of the temple complex, as it holds many of the original artifacts of the temple. It features an entrance gate, and royal enclosure with a massive stone gong and large statue of the founder. Inside is a double-gable roof, red-lacquered pillars and interior painted gauze similar to Byodoin Temple.

Surrounding Kaisando are the gorgeous sample gardens that fill the inner courtyard. The gardens are filled with bonsai plants, Zen rock gardens, and an imposing sand garden. The rock garden is said to represent strength while the bonsai represent the great potential of life. New and old join together in a peaceful coexistence. For visitors, coupons are available to entrance the Founder’s Hall and the rest of the temple complex. Kaisando is also well connected to many local attractions, making it easy to visit in the same area.
