Convent of Christ

The Convent of Christ is an iconic site located in the Portuguese city of Tomar. It was founded in 1160 by Gualdim Pais, the fourth Grand Master of the Order of the Temple, and is a masterpiece of Manueline architecture. The highlight of the convent is the 12th century Castle of Tomar, which is fortified with towers, ramparts and walls. In addition to the castle, the complex includes various churches, chapels, cloisters, courtyards and monastic buildings. The interior of the convent is filled with ornate details, sculptures, and stunning works of art, such as the stunning “Christ” figure in the main chapel and the Holy Grail in the lower cloister. The convent has been listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site since 1983.
