The Westerkerk (‘western church’) is an iconic Dutch Reformed church in the heart of Amsterdam, Netherlands. Built between 1620 and 1631, it is the highest and second-largest church in the country. The 400-foot tower, featuring a baroque spire, is a major landmark in the city and can be seen from many parts of the city.Inside, the beautiful rood-screen and 16th-century stained glass liven up the interior of the church. The Westerkerk is also home to the final resting place of Dutch artist Rembrandt van Rijn.

A visit to the church is not complete without a walk around the neighborhood, known as de Jordaan. This historically working-class neighborhood is known for its narrow canals, crooked alleys, narrow row houses and artists' flats. Exploring this cobbled streetscape is a great way to explore the city and get to know the locals. The Westerkerk is open to visitors every day between 1-4pm and admission is free. Photography is allowed inside the church, however, visitors must be respectful of other visitors and be mindful when using flash photography. Other than during Mass times, the church is usually quite empty and is the perfect opportunity to take stunning photos and explore Amsterdam’s unique culture.
