Built in 2004, it has been the tallest building in the world for 7 years (2004-2010). Its design consists of 8 cylindrical sections, from a base shaped as 8, gradually tapering to a narrow point at the tip and a spire, creating a symbolic image of Taiwan in the shape of a big bamboo stalk. The building is surrounded by a large park, and the Observatory atop it provides a 360-degree view of Taipei and its surroundings. Elephant Mountain (八仙山) is a popular hiking spot and photogenic spot, situated next to the Taipei 101. From its summit, visitors can have a panoramic view of the city and its lush forested valleys.
