Sveti Sava church
📍 Serbia
The Sveti Sava Orthodox church in Belgrade, Serbia is one of the largest Orthodox churches in the world, and is the largest in the Balkans. It was built to commemorate Serbia's most beloved saint, Sveti Sava, who founded the medieval Serbian Orthodox Church. The dome is topped with gold and surmounted by a bronze cross. This impressive sight, located in the Serbian capital's famous Temple Square, is a masterpiece of neo-Byzantine architecture and artwork that has to be seen to be fully appreciated. Although the interior was heavily damaged during the World War, when the church was used as an ammunition storage, it was restored and serves as a place of worship and cultural center. Visitors are welcome at Sveti Sava and can explore the many icons, frescoes, mosaics and intricately carved frescoes.
