Rattenberg Oostenrijk

Rattenberg, located in the Austrian state of Tyrol, is one of the oldest cities in Austria. With its picturesque setting at the foot of the Alps, Rattenberg exudes Old World charm, from its winding cobblestone streets to its 14th century town walls and towers. The huge medieval gates of Burgstaller Gate and the Roter Turm (Red Tower) allow visitors to see the town’s defensive walls, as well as providing an impressive panoramic view of Rattenberg itself. Further along the walls at Brunnertkopf Towers you can find a replica of a giant hand-forged cannon. Rattenberg was once renowned for its glass-making industry and the Landestöchterhlöfe (Glass-makers’ Houses) is a reminder of those times. This collection of traditional half-timbered houses displays woodcarvings which tell stories about the glassmakers of Rattenberg. The town is also home to several fascinating churches, such as the Pilgrimage Church of St. Bartholomä and the Church of the Assumption of Mary, both containing elaborately carved wooden alters and expensively adorned parapets.
