It is visible from much of the Portland metro area and its year-round snowpack makes it a great destination for hikers, skiers, snowboarders, climbers, and sightseers. Numerous trails lead to Mt. Hood's summit, offering breathtaking views of the surrounding peaks and the Columbia River Gorge. During winter, the Timberline Ski Area offers a great ski and snowboarding experience. Mt. Hood is also home to several glaciers, including Eliot Glacier, Palmer Glacier, Coe Glacier and Glisan Glacier. It is also an important training ground for high-altitude climbers who wish to tackle bigger mountains. Adventure trips such as whitewater rafting, kayaking and high-alpine hiking can also be arranged from nearby rivers and streams. The traditional communities of the Mt.
