Founded in 1776 by Spanish missionaries, it was the seventh mission settled in California. It was named for Saint John of Capistrano, who is also known for his leadership in the Alhambra Decree, which liberated thousands of Jews in Spain in the late 14th century. The mission is famous for its architectural beauty and a variety of historic sites. Visitors can see the Great Stone Church, the remains of buildings and walls, a lime kiln and two garden courtyards. It also has a small museum and a well-stocked library containing ancient manuscripts and books.
