Founded during the 15th century, its history is a symbol of faith in a region with its own unique culture, influenced by Nordic and Indigenous Sami customs. The church was built in traditional Lapland style, using spruce timber logs and a turf roof. Inside, there is fine woodwork, including a magnificent golden altar and pulpit. Other interior features include woodcarvings, textiles and a 19th-century chandelier. The building is also famous for its unique oculus window, which is said to let the church breathe in air.
