Dungeness Spit is the world's longest natural sand spit. It is a 5.5-mile long sandy shoreline extending into the Strait of Juan de Fuca. Dungeness Spit is a beautiful and unique place to explore. On Dungeness Spit you will find an abundance of wildlife. The spit is a nesting area for many birds, including bald eagles, cormorants, ospreys, and snow geese. There are also numerous small rodents, squirrels, and otters living in the area. At the far end of the spit lies the Dungeness National Wildlife Refuge. It is comprised of over 1,600 acres of land, including saltwater beach, mudflat, and uplands. Visitors can explore this wildlife refuge while enjoying the breathtaking views of the Olympics and the Cascade Mountains. Photographers will appreciate the stunning sunrises and photographic opportunities of the wildlife. It is a great spot for hikers, as there are a variety of trails to explore. For those wishing to relax and unwind, Dungeness Spit also has a campground and recreational beach area.
