Bontenn no hana is an iconic sight in Yokosuka City, Japan. It is an awe-inspiring structure located in the Mizenmitsu Park, admist greenery and landscaped gardens. The monument is made up of two enormous stones, one around nine feet high, and the other more than twelve feet high. Symbolic of the bond between Japan and the United States, the stones are engraved with words from a traditional Japanese poem. It was built after a U.S. warship bombarded the city in 1855 in order to restore peace between the two countries. Visitors can explore and learn about the incredible history of this place, which reminds of a turbulent past. It is also a great spot for relaxing, with stunning views of Yokosuka's seaside and national treasures. You can enjoy a slow walk in the park and appreciate the magnificences of nature. The park is open all year round, free of charge.
