The 11th-century Basilique de Vézelay in Vézelay, Burgundy, France is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and considered one of the world's great Romanesque churches. Built in the late-eleventh century, the church is home to works of art by great masters such as Burgundian sculptors Gislebertus and Vilmon of Trigny, and the 12th-century stained glass windows of the upper nave. An impressive western portal framed by two imposing stone towers is a signature part of the building's exterior. Design highlights inside include the vast nave, grand ambulatory, and a crypt that dates back to the 6th-century and houses the relics of Mary Magdalene. Visitors can also explore the adjacent museum housed within a 16th-century abbey, which showcases artifacts from the basilica's history.
