📍 Från North Side Fields, France
Aqueduc du Gier is an impressive Roman-era stone-arch aqueduct in Chaponost, France. Built between 23 and 19 B.C., it's one of the oldest aqueducts still standing in the world. The 27-metre-high structure consists of 15 full arches, which span the fast-flowing river Gier. In total, the aqueduct is about 250 metres long and is an incredible feat of engineering for its time. The aqueduct is open for visitors every day and makes for interesting sightseeing. You can wander around the grounds and take in the architecture that has stood for two millenia. You can also see some small artifacts from the Roman period, unearthed during recent archeological excavations. An added bonus is taking a stroll along the path next to the Aqueduc and soaking in the idyllic French rural atmosphere.
