Santuario de Nuestra Señora del Rocío - Spain
Santuario de Nuestra Señora del Rocío is a famous pilgrimage site in Almonte, Spain. According to legend, a wooden statue of the Virgin Mary - Nuestra Señora del Rocío - was found in the marshes of this town in the 13th century. Its discovery was seen as a miracle and since then the site has become an important pilgrimage destination, receiving tens of thousands of annually visitors. The centerpiece of the Santuario de Nuestra Señora del Rocío is the basilica, in which its original wooden statue of the Virgin is kept. Other interesting attractions of the site are its Baroque-style post entrance and its Santuario de la Virgen village. It consists of the Salón de los Pasos, the Antigua Pollera (a small chapel), and a beautiful garden with a 16th century fountain and a flagpole surrounded by cypress trees. Tourists and photographers visiting the site can also buy souvenirs and discover the local gastronomy at nearby restaurants and shops.
