Plaza de la Villa de Arévalo, in the charming town of Arévalo in the autonomous community of Castilla y León, is a dynamic public square full of history. The town itself dates back to Celtic times, and the plaza has been declared a “Bien de Interés Cultural” (Cultural Heritage Site). It is located in the northwestern half of the town, and its irregular shape is the result of having been adapted to the hills and riverside terrain commanded by the walled city throughout the centuries. In the 13th century, the plaza was surrounded by a wall and tower, and the spot of the old town gate is clearly visible to this day. Within the walls you can still find two gothic towers and two gates – one dedicated to St. Honorius and the other to St. Thomas – as well as a castle and a large courtyard, all filled with history, creating a magical atmosphere. The north side of the square is home to the beautiful Church of San Miguel. Here one can see a mixture of styles due to the fortification remains, with standing watch as a witness throughout time. Today it is a great place to stroll around, enjoy the local cuisine, listen to stories, and of course, take in its architectural beauty.
