The Pantheon in Rome is one of the most iconic remnants of ancient Roman architecture. Built during the reign of Hadrian in 126 AD, it is the best-preserved Roman temple in the world. The geometrically perfect green-grey granite dome, which stands 27m (89ft) above the ground and spans the same diameter, is a marvel of engineering. Inside the Pantheon, there is a treasure trove of ancient Roman sculptures and paintings, as well as a large marble altar at the center. It's open daily to visitors free of charge, so make sure to spend some time exploring the huge domed ceiling and three rows of Corinthian columns. It's a great spot for people-watching too, as crowds of tourists from all over the world marvel at this amazing piece of history.
