Martinstor is an historic archway situated in the town of Freiburg im Breisgau, Germany. It is one of the key landmarks of the town and is a popular attraction for travelers and photographers alike. The Martinstor forms the entrance to the M├╝nsterplatz, one of the most beautiful squares in the city. At two-stories high and sixteen meters wide, it was built in 1210, and was originally a gatehouse that offered protection to the citizens within. The architecture is a mix of Romanesque and Gothic styles and features a statue of St. Martin on the southern side that is said to be the protector and patron of the city. Another curious feature of Martinstor is the Ochsen, a masonry depicting four bulls around the gatehouse that indicate the location of a former butcher's market. Today, the gatehouse stands as an iconic structure in Freiburg, with its intricate details and colorful history making it a great destination for travelers and photographers.
