Chile's Castillo Hidalgo is the country's most popular historic monument, offering breathtaking views over the Atacama desert and the Pacific coast. Located at a strategic crossroads between Chile's Central Valley and the Atacama region, the imposing Castillo Hidalgo served as a fortress and check post during colonial times. Its original structure, built of adobe and stones, features two towers and can still be seen today. There is also a large cemetery of soldiers and revolutionary heroes, a reminder of the nation's struggle for freedom and independence.
