The 13th century stone-written walls of Aigues-Mortes, France, known as Le mura, are an impressive site for visitors to explore. Built by King Louis IX in the 1280s, the walls were meant to protect the area from external threats. The ramparts stretch for 3.2 kilometers, surrounding the entire city. Visitors of the city can take a leisurely walk along the top of the walls for some beautiful views of the ancient city and its salt marshes beyond. You can even see the fabulous spire of the Église de la Madeleine from atop the walls. Notably, a section of the walls known as the Barbarues Tower, was used to guard three of the city's main entrances. Make sure to also check out the nearby Revellato Tower with its more than 700 stairs and five levels. With its rich history and grandiose features, Le mura is a must-see destination in Aigues-Mortes!
