Gole del Verdon is a magnificent canyon located near the town of Rougon in the south of France. This area has some of the deepest and widest river canyons in Europe and is a popular destination for outdoor enthusiasts due to its rugged and wild terrain. The Verdon Gorge, as it's sometimes known, is over 20 km long and generally up to 700 meters deep. It is characterized by steeply sloping sides and a variety of colorful rock, cliffs, and landscapes. The region was also recently declared a national park, making it more accessible to tourists. In the air, you can take in the spectacular views of the shimmering river beneath and limestone cliffs beyond. On the ground, explore the area's many trails, villages, and gorges along the French Riviera. A number of caves and grottos in the area make for excellent exploring, as do a few archaeological sites like the Ch√Ęteau de Quinson. In the nearby town of Rougon, you can find plenty of activities, including kayaking, rafting, and paragliding, as well as delicious French cuisine, wineries, and markets overflowing with local delicacies. It's also a popular starting point for hikers, offering routes to the surrounding peaks or towards the region's prized lake, lac de Sainte-Croix.
