Schokkerbos

Schokkerbos is an old marshland in Schokland, Netherlands that's been preserved in its natural state by the government after being deemed a national park in the early 2000s. The area is perfectly flat, taking on the look of wide-open prairie with natural dykes to keep the marshland from flooding. Paths lead visitors through reed beds, puddle towns, and the main lake, offering plenty of opportunity for bird watching as well as biking and hiking. Keep an eye out for Bechstein’s bat, a species of bat that’s been seen in the park. Schokkerbos also connects to the Elfstedenpad, a long-distance footpath that takes hikers across the entire province of Friesland.
