📍 Japan
Kennin-ji Hatto, the main lecture hall of Kennin-ji Temple in Kyoto, is one of the oldest surviving buildings in Japan. As one of the oldest Zen temples in the country, Kennin-ji is a major part of Kyoto’s cultural legacy. Founded in 1202, Kennin-ji's Hatto was built in the Kamakura period and is known for its beautiful red-lacquered doorways and the statue of Yakushi Buddha, the temple patron, located at the south entrance. Inside, visitors have the opportunity to observe beautiful examples of Zen Buddhist art, such as painted scrolls, calligraphy, and calligraphic panels. There is also an Ikenobo Katsura garden on the temple grounds and a charming tea house. Although open to visitors year-round, summertime is especially popular at Kennin-ji Hatto to witness the garden's brightly-colored blooms and kimono-clad visitors.
