Independence Monument

The Independence Monument in Phnom Penh is an iconic symbol of Cambodian liberation from French rule in 1953. Located in the centre of the city, the monument stands 60 metres tall, composed of five lotus-shaped stepped towers crowned with a central stupa. The monument features 32 flame-like spires encircling the top stupa, representing the 32 provinces of Cambodia. Around the base, four smaller towers replicate the Bodhi Tree and each symbolically represent the citizens of Cambodia. The many steps around the monument symbolize the many steps of enlightenment made by the Khmer people. It is a true symbol of hope and strength.
