Hamburg’s Rathaus (town hall) is one of the grandest of its kind in Europe and its surrounding Mahnmal St. Nikolai make it even grander. Built in a classical style, the Rathaus boasts bronze reliefs, impressive red brick spires, and a richly decorated facade, which you can admire from the steps in front of the building. An iconic structure in the centre of Hamburg, it stands as a monument to the city’s power and wealth. The Mahnmal St. Nikolai, located near the city hall, is a memorial to victims of the Second World War. It pays homage to all victims of war, terror and tyranny, and the memory of those lost is held in starkly silent reverence. The memorial features a sloping ramp leading up to the 11 meter tall central tower and is illuminated in blue light at night. Both Rathaus and Mahnmal St. Nikolai provide breathtaking views of the cityscape and are great spots for photographers and casual tourists alike.
